Help us bring groomed cross-country skiing to the Hamilton area.

The North Shore Nordic Association, a 501C3 tax exempt non-profit charitable organization formed by local residents with the goal of acquiring and operating ski grooming equipment on some of our local trails. The NSNA will work with local land stewards to groom a classical and skate ski lane on several existing trails including Patton Park, portions of the Discover Hamilton Trail, Appleton Farms and Grassrides, Bradley Palmer State Park and hopefully Sagamore Hill.

The NSNA is seeking funding from multiple sources to acquire an 84” Groomer and a special utility snowmobile to tow the groomer. Additionally we seek to acquire a trailer, operating insurance, fuel, signage, trail maps and signs. Please consider making a donation in any amount on our website www.nsnordic.org. All donations are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law. WE need to raise a total of approximately $25,000 to get the operation up and running for the winter of 2015-2016. Subsequent years will only require funds to operate and maintain our equipment and pay for fuel and insurance. The NSNA will be an entirely volunteer run operation and we are seeking anyone interested in helping out in any way.

Once we are operational all ski trail use will be free of charge and supported by donations. NSNA will issue donor cards, as a token of appreciation to those making a donation of at least $100.

NSNA is also seeking to partner with corporate sponsors to fund a portion of our capital campaign.

Trail & Grooming Updates

Monday Jan 7

Carol Catalano

A big thanks to our volunteer groomers and everyone that came out to ski this weekend! It was great to be out on the trails with you and see so many of you enjoying a beautiful day outside yesterday.

During the day Sunday we saw vast improvements to our snow surface. Early in the morning, Pingree was resurfaced, now providing the firmest skating surface in our trail network. Later in the morning, the Grassrides trails at Appleton were groomed with the Ginzu for the first time after this storm, recieving multiple passes of skate grooming as well as some classic tracks.

This morning,

Saturday Jan 6 Update

Welcome to the weekend, skiers! We’ve got plenty of snow on the ground and a bright sun overhead! ❄️☀️❄️☀️

North Shore Nordic has been been grooming into the night Friday, however the wind has been fighting back hard in large, open fields. Despite our efforts, some fields have waves of drifting snow mid-field and deeper drifts at the leeward sides. Very dramatic to see in person. The wooded trails are beautiful.

The following trail areas have been skate groomed with roller, with some surfaced with corduroy:

Good Morning Skiers,

After "bombogenesis" winter storm Grayson left us with a over a foot of fresh snow, we are looking forward to some excellent skiing in the days to come.  Facing challenging grooming conditions (check yesterday's report for more details) our volunteer groomers have laid down a preliminary surface on much of our trail network. Grooming deep fresh snow is challenging and optimal conditions cannot be achieved right off the bat, requiring multiple passes and adequate time to let the snow 'set up'. Over the day today, our team will continue to work on resurfacing existing groomed terrain, as well as set classic tracks on wooded trails.

The following trail areas have been skate groomed with roller, and with some surfaced with corduroy or have a set tracks this morning ; there is lots of fresh snow and good skiing to be had.

  • Appleton Farms: Lamson Field
  • Appleton Farms: Grassrides Trails
  • Pingree School Loop
  • Harvard Forest- Pingree Woodlands
  • Bradley Palmer- Asbury Loop

Be sure to check back for additional updates as more grooming takes place throughout the day.

Hope to see you out on the trails and remember to support North Shore Nordic with a donation!

At 8:00pm we measured the snowfall from Storm Grayson at 12", and it is still coming down.

We are going to call today’s battle between North Shore Nordic’s valiant grooming crews and Mother Nature’s blizzard a tie!

She had us on the ropes in the open fields, with white out conditions challenging navigation and deep 3’ drifts swallowing the sled and stalling the roller. More than once, teams had to dig the sled out or unhitch the roller and “pre-pack” with the snowmobile alone. Rolled trails quickly filled in with blowing snow.

Crews recovered in the sheltered, wooded areas, establishing base trails in preparation for finish grooming tomorrow.

The Scorecard:

Pingree Woodland/Harvard Forest, Appleton Grassrides, and the Asbury Trail in Bradley Palmer are the most skiable surfaces. These trails have been rolled, but do not have set tracks or fine corduroy.

The open fields at Appleton Farms and Pingree do not have established trails that are not covered by drifting snow.

With a full roster of volunteers we will be out early tomorrow grooming the fields as much as the forecast and wind allows. We also plan to set tracks on the wooded trails.

Dec 29th 2017

Our volunteer grooming team did a test up and around Sagamore Hill. They encountered thin cover, wind blown, and icy conditions. There wasn't enough snow to use our ginzu groomer and our roller had little effect due to the icy crust. There is still good skiing at Appleton, Pingree, and Bradley Palmer. See our grooming report from yesterday for a complete list of trails, and don't forget to donate. See you out there for some good winter exercise!

Dec 27th Update

Carol Catalano

After a day moving equipment and making minor repairs, NSNA braved the 10 degree chill and was back refreshing Pingree tonight. The skating lanes should be wide, firm and fast with extensive classic tracks set as well. Hope you get a chance to get out there and ski! Don't forget to donate!

Dec 26th mid day update

Carol Catalano

Last night grooming volunteers connected the Pingree Trails to Bradley Palmer via the Asbury Loop Trail. This morning they headed over to Appleton and groomed for skate and classic at Lamson Field, the Plains Loop, and the Farmstead connector. In some areas of light snow coverage the track setter could not be used. Conditions are soft corduroy due to very dry snow, and and high winds are covering fresh tracks in some areas.

The plan for this afternoon is to groom the Williams Field Loop at Appleton.

A White Christmas Surprise!

Carol Catalano

Board member Jim Trudeau snuck away from holiday festivities early afternoon to groom Pingree, and he reports wide, firm corduroy. Great for skating or classic. He was able to come back again tonight for second pass and added classic tracks. Blowing snow may fill in some of the sections in the open fields. Check back tomorrow for additional updates.
